Pilot Program

It all started on the north shore.

We put our ideas and our beliefs into action by partnering with 6 restaurants, 13+ event partners, and 1 cafeteria partner to prevent the waste of over 17,191 single-use containers.

Our pilot set out to develop and test the ways in which the food service sector could transition from disposable ware to reusables in Hawaiʻi. We have learned so much that we can use to support the continued growth of the zero waste ecosystem in Hawaiʻi and beyond.

Mahalo to our funders, users, partners, and staff for helping make this happen!

How It Worked:

Checking out a reusable takeout container was similar to borrowing a library book.

Sign-up for an account, borrow a container, eat, and then return it. As long as you returned your container to us, the program was free!

We had 3 convenient return stations in Haleʻiwa town. After you enjoyed your waste-free takeout, drop your container in one of our return bins (rinsed if you can) and we would collect it to be washed and sanitized, meeting all of Department of Health’s requirements for food safety.

Our containers were washed the same way restaurants wash their plates for dine in, so they are just as safe and clean!
